In his book, The Inner Game of Soccer, former pro soccer player and writer Dan McLaughlin talks about the “call” part of the game. It’s the time that the referee has to make the call you didn’t see.

It’s not difficult to get a call wrong. You are never 100% sure about the call. The rule-book says the call should be made by the referee, who is in a better position to make this call. But there is also a lot of chance that the referee will not see the ball or the player’s intention. But more importantly, there is a lot of chance that the player will make a mistake.

We all know that when it comes to football, if you make a bad call and the ref is going to call the same penalty you were hoping for, you are going to have a bad game. For example, if a player is flagged for a penalty, the ref has to make a decision on whether or not the player should be penalized. If the ref makes a mistake, he will then have to make a call. It’s this call-making that has to be right.

The problem with most rules in sports is that they are written to make a player’s mistake look like a big deal. The referee has to be right at the beginning, and the only way to do this is to be wrong all the time.
